Your tires slowly wear out over time due to friction and driving conditions. They can also be affected by other issues, like a lack of tire rotations or wheel alignment issues. As your Chevy dealership, we want you to know some signs you need to visit us for a tire service.

Visible Tread Wear Bars

The tread is the raised pattern on a tire that allows it to grip the surface. The tread is separated by grooves that allow water, mud, and snow to be pushed behind the tire when you drive. The tread wear bars are raised sections within the grooves that run perpendicular to the tread, and they act as warning signs that the tread is wearing down.

You can’t see these bars on a new tire, but as the tread thickness drops due to friction with the surface, they will become visible. They’re approximately 2/32″ high, which is also the minimum tread height that allows for safe and legal driving. You can estimate tread health by running your finger across the tread and wear bars. If the two are about the same height, it’s time to visit us for new tires.

Bald Tires

This type of tire is severely worn and very dangerous to drive on. A bald tire has lost almost all its tread and looks relatively smooth. As we saw above, the tread’s function is to grip the surface so you can control your vehicle. It also makes braking faster, as good tread produces better friction with the surface, so you can stop faster.

Bald tires are particularly dangerous on wet, muddy, or snowy surfaces, as they make skidding more likely. In addition, bald tires are illegal to drive on due to these dangers, and you could receive a citation. Our technicians will examine your tires, and we’ll replace any that are severely worn so you can drive safely and legally.

Overinflated Tires

Many drivers think only underinflated tires are unsafe, but overinflated ones are just as dangerous. If a tire contains too much air, the tread section curls up on both sides, placing your vehicle’s weight on the center of the tread. This increases wear and tear on the center and reduces the tread area available to assist in gripping the surface and generating friction when you need to hit the brakes.

Overinflation is also dangerous as the air inside a tire heats up due to friction with the surface. When a tire has too much air, the rubber is stretched thinner than it should be, and this can make it more likely to blow out. We’ll correct your tire pressure and replace any damaged tires.
