Your tires slowly wear out over time due to friction and driving conditions. They can also be affected by other issues, like a lack of tire rotations or wheel alignment issues. As your Chevy dealership, we want you to know some signs you need to visit us for a tire service.

Visible Tread Wear Bars

The tread is the raised pattern on a tire that allows it to grip the surface. The tread is separated by grooves that allow water, mud, and snow to be pushed behind the tire when you drive. The tread wear bars are raised sections within the grooves that run perpendicular to the tread, and they act as warning signs that the tread is wearing down.

You can’t see these bars on a new tire, but as the tread thickness drops due to friction with the surface, they will become visible. They’re approximately 2/32″ high, which is also the minimum tread height that allows for safe and legal driving. You can estimate tread health by running your finger across the tread and wear bars. If the two are about the same height, it’s time to visit us for new tires.

Chevy Brakes

Brake pads are a crucial component of your vehicle’s braking system. They are positioned inside the calipers, and when you press the brake pedal, pressurized brake fluid forces the calipers to press against the rotors. This creates friction, slowing down your wheels and bringing your car to a stop. At Turner Chevrolet, we want to ensure that your vehicle remains safe and reliable, which is why we’ve outlined some key signs that it’s time to replace your brake pads.

1. Illuminated Brake Pad Warning Light

Your Chevrolet’s dashboard may feature a brake pad warning light—typically shown as a circle within dotted brackets. This light illuminates when one or more of your brake pads has worn down and requires replacement. A healthy brake pad typically has a 1/2-inch-thick layer of friction material. Over time, this material wears down as it generates friction to stop the wheels. When the material thickness drops to 1/4 inch, your braking distance increases, and you may notice reduced performance. Sensors detect this, triggering the brake pad warning light. Once the pads are replaced, the light will turn off.
